The ‘man cave’ became a buzz concept in the design world years ago – creating the perfect space for our guys, loaded with technology, leather and bravado was the subject of reality programming and the envy of men who went without. But what about the man in our lives who is looking for something a little more sophisticated: a place for reading and quiet reflection, a place to zone out and unplug. What? It could happen.
I have only done a handful of traditional dens in my years and relied heavily on a few design lessons to make them great.
Suiting Fabrics
Felts, tweeds and wools abound right now. They are available as upholstery and accessory fabrics and deliver mega manly style. Be careful not to overuse but blending pattern with solids can be stunning.
Details, Details
Details in a man’s space need to be simple, crisp and tailored. Buttons, top stitching and baseball stitching are all easy go-tos for things like toss cushions and upholstery. And drapery and furniture lines should be kept clean and straight. Skip the flange, the fluff, the ruffle.
Favorite Things
We all have men in our lives whose design tastes may waiver from our main stream. I get not wanting to litter your walls with misty golf scenes or pile university trophies in and amongst family treasures. But here is the thing: that stuff needs to go somewhere. Ask your guy to edit for starters – is the 9th grade Volleyball Championship trophy REALLY a must-keep? A few precious memories can be beautiful on display. And of the 16 golf prints collected, widdle them down to favorites – either sentimental or otherwise – frame and matte them similarly, hanging in a cluster or in neat rows.
